Birding Trails
Location: East Water Street

The Rail Switch Nature Trail at the end of East Water Street offers just over .3 miles of riverside trail with boardwalk and three large, shaded observation decks. This peaceful trail provides excellent views of wooded and marshland habitats on the edge of downtown Plymouth.

Nearby Conaby Creek, offers paddlers and other boaters outstanding opportunities to see and hear wood duck, balk eagle, osprey, northern parula, yellow-throated warbler, summer tanager and many others. Blue-winges teal and other waterfowl use the area in the winter. Daytrips or overnight camping by reservation on Roanoker River Partners (www.roanokeriverpartners.org) platforms are excellent ways to enjoy the habitat. Be advised of hunting seasons before entering the area.

Just a short distance away the Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge is a national treasure with its hundreds of thousands of tundra swans, geese and ducks each winter.
